49ers QB Marcus Mariota to be re-evaluated after back injury

By David MooreAssociated PressThe 49ers are going through a quarterback re-evaluate this week.

They’ve already lost three of their top four quarterbacks, and now they’re also going through the second round of the draft with a pair of quarterbacks in the first round, according to multiple reports.

The first round was where they chose Mariota with the 39th overall pick, but he suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 1 and has yet to play this year.

Mariota had been expected to be the first quarterback off the board when the NFL Draft started Thursday night.

Mariota suffered a fractured fibula and dislocated shoulder during the game against the Colts, a day after being cleared to return.

He was placed on injured reserve and then was placed back on the PUP list.

The second round was when the 49ers selected quarterback Marcus Mariot at 39 overall.

Mariot was supposed to be selected first, but the 49ERS picked Mariota second, meaning the team has to start looking at their draft class and their quarterback depth chart before it can decide who to draft.

The 49ERS will need to look at their quarterback room in the coming weeks to see who will be available to start the season, and Mariota’s return would give them a lot of flexibility with how they look at the position going forward.

The 49ers drafted Mariota, who was the first of three quarterbacks taken in the second and third rounds last season, in the fourth round in 2016.

Mariutis first two seasons with the 49ER were a total disaster, which was why the 49 had to cut ties with him after just one season.

The other two quarterbacks on the 49er roster, Connor Cook and Quinton Patton, both missed the entire season due to injury, but are expected to play again this season.

Marios injury has left the 49 in need of a replacement, and it is likely that the 49 can find someone in the secondary who can fill the position.

It’s also possible that the team could choose to make Mariota a restricted free agent, which would allow him to return to the 49 at a lower salary.

The team has a $12 million salary cap hit this season, which means it would be difficult to bring him back.MARIOTA, 36, is coming off a season in which he was a two-time Pro Bowler, the best player in the NFL last season and one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history.

The former Oregon Duck was the only quarterback to complete more than 60 percent of his passes for 1,000-yard seasons.

Mariots interception rate last season was the highest of any quarterback in the league, and he threw a touchdown pass in each of his first two starts.

Marecic was a second-round pick by the 49 with the 31st overall pick in 2013.

He started four games and was sacked a league-high 22 times for 586 yards and a touchdown.

The last time the 49 drafted a quarterback was the 2000 NFL Draft, when they selected Tom Brady with the 51st overall selection.

Brady was the No. 1 overall pick the next year.MARECIC: Is Mariota the best QB in the draft?

The 49ERS answer is yes.

Marias success as a rookie has made him one of NFL history’s best players.
